Shinigami and YOU
Shinigami, more commonly known as death gods, are indeed real. Not only that, but they could be right behind you and you wouldn't even know. That's right, shinigami are invisible. However, shinigami posess a numerous amount of tricks up their sleeves and one of them is remarkable.
Shinigami posess the power to appear in human form. Not only that, but when in human form, anyone and everyone can see them. It should be noted that animals have a distinct hatred of shinigami when they are in human form, and usually growl, bark, hiss, or wail at them.
All shinigami can turn into humans, and when they do, they are basically like humans with the eyes of the shinigami. Shinigami can turn back into their true forms at any time, most prefer to do it descreetly. When not in human form, only other shinigami and the humans who have touched the Death Note can see and/or hear them.
It is expressly forbidden for a shinigami in human form to mate or have relations with a human. Doing such results in their immediate expulsion from the Shinigami Relm. Shinigami who have broken this law are trapped forever in their human form, with little of their abilities left.
Shinigami also posess the ability to hypnotize humans. However, this skill takes years to learn and only works on those who are easily influenced. There are also rules governing this. It can only be used when neccessary, and when a human has a Shinigami's Death Note. That way, the Shinigami can create a cover while following the human.
When a Shinigami becomes trapped in human form, they can still see other Shinigami as well as read the names and lifespans of the humans around them. They cannot be killed by the Death Note, as they are still Shinigami. The human-shinigami live out the rest of whatever lifespan they have accumulated. If enough time passes and their transgression is forgiven, the Shinigami King can allow a Shinigami to regain their original form, with the clause that they can never turn into a human again.
